Eugene Lorton

Posthumously Inducted: 2005

EUGENE LORTON (1869-1949) led a long and distinguished career in journalism. He worked for the Medicine Lodge Cresset and the Idaho papers, the Salubria Citizen and Boise City Sentinel. He established the Emmet Index and the Washtucna Enterprise (Wash.). Lorton also bought the Mound City Republic in Kansas and was managing editor of the Walla Walla Union (Wash.). He came to the Tulsa World in 1911 and became owner in 1917.

Selection Process

Honorees are selected by a committee comprised of hall of fame members, including its director, and distinguished leaders in journalism. The Selection Committee considers all nominations, both new ones and those held over from previous years, before selecting the honorees.

The 2024 Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame nominee submission deadline is Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
